MDC to Host Evening Forum with Seattle City Council Candidates

The Metropolitan Democratic Club is proud to be the first city-wide organization to present members and friends with an opportunity to hear from all 15 [filed and invited] candidates running for seats on the Seattle City Council.  The forum is free and open to the public, and will be moderated by Sen. Pete Francis. Boxed dinners will be available for purchase.
The event will take place from 5:30 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, May 6, at Labor Temple in downtown Seattle, 2800 First Avenue, Hall #1
Parking is free, and is located across the street, at 2801 First Ave., under the Ellington Condominiums. It can be accessed from the alley that runs parallel to First Avenue, between Clay Street and Broad Street. The Labor Temple's garage door is the door closest to Broad Street. To gain entry, you must enter the code *011203# on the keypad to the right of the door. The characters and numbers must be punched in in that order, or it won't work. When they are punched in correctly, you will get a green light on the keypad and the door will open.)

The CREATION Project Boosts African American Artists
  
The CREATION Project is a new works and professional development program created by the Central District Forum for Arts & Ideas for African-American performing artists based in King County. The purpose of The CREATION Project is to support the creation of new work for Seattle's African-American performing artists in the formative stages of their careers; to use the artistic process as the platform for learning critical professional development skills; and to support distinctive African-American artistic voices. 
 
A panel will select up to four participants representing a range of performing arts disciplines. Each participant will receive a $1,000 stipend to be used towards the creation of a new work, participate in professional development seminars, facilitated peer discussions and a showcase at Broadway Performance Hall in May 2010.
This is the second round for The CREATION Project. During the CD Forum's 2007-2008 season, six artists participated in the first CREATION Project. Former participants have gone on to receive numerous grant awards including an Artist Trust Fellowship and perform their work in Seattle and the nation. The CD Forum is proud to support and commit to nurturing and presenting African-American artists in King County that represent the diversity and quality of contemporary African-American arts & culture.

Mattias Klum to Speak About Borneo's Dwindling Forests

Widely respected photographer, filmmaker and biodiversity advocate Mattias Klum will speak about the changing landscape of Borneo's forests. He will also offer ways in which people can make a positive difference for the environment in their daily lives. Klum will present Borneo: Paradise under Siege on Monday, May 11, at 7:30 p.m. and Tuesday, May 12, at 7:30 p.m. in the S. Mark Taper Foundation Auditorium at Benaroya Hall as part of the National Geographic Live! speaker series.
Klum will also make a special appearance at Woodland Park Zoo's Zoomazium on Sunday, May 10, from 12 to 1 p.m. Klum will help to introduce the zoo's newest exhibit, a colony of 20 endangered Humboldt penguins who have returned to the zoo in an all new, sustainable, "green" exhibit that will save 3 million gallons of water a year. The event is free with zoo admission.
Tickets are on sale now with discounts for full-time students (with ID). Membership discounts apply for members of the National Geographic Society and Seattle Symphony subscribers. Umoja Fest Pageant Seeks Candidates

If you or someone you know would be a good candidate to represent our community in Seafair and related activities, attend our information session for this years Umoja Fest Pageant held again this week, Thursday April 30th & Friday May 1st at the Seattle Vocational Institute 6:30pm Rm 102-103. 

This year's pageant will focus on "Healing and Rebuilding Our Village".
Each contestant for the Umoja Fest Pageant must be:
• Between the ages of 18-24
• of African/African American descent
• A US citizen or permanent resident
• Enrolled in college/university/vocational school or a senior in high school planning to attend a college/university or a vocational institution for Fall 2009-Spring 2010 quarter/semester
• must be available to represent the community for Seafair weekend and participate in all Umoja Fest activities. 
The winner of the Umoja Fest Pageant will be awarded a scholarship to further her education at an institution of higher learning and entered in to the Seafair scholarship pageant as well.
