PORTLAND, OR—At the leading edge of Portland’s jazz scene, Montavilla Jazz Festival’s tenth season will run September 1–3, 2023 with concerts across the city featuring original jazz.

The festival begins with a world premiere of Views of an Urban Volcano, a three-part commission inspired by Portland’s beloved extinct cinder cone-turned-greenspace: Mt. Tabor Park. This collaboration with the 12-member Portland Jazz Composers Ensemble will include new works by composers Cyrus Nabipoor, Kirsten Volness, and James Powers that have been influenced through a series of community input events.

The festival will feature Portland jazz heavyweights Alan Jones and Darrell Grant in headlining spots in addition to a cadre of their peers, rising stars, and several GRAMMY Award-winning special guests.

Montavilla Jazz Executive Director Neil Mattson shares, “It is incredible how far we have come in 10 years of making space for Portland’s local jazz artists. We have an astounding amount of talent for a city this size. We can’t wait to see what happens over the next decade as Montavilla Jazz continues to push the envelope and welcome new listeners into the jazz fold.”

The full lineup will be announced on Saturday, May 20 at Montavilla Jazz's Season Reveal Fundraiser. The full schedule and tickets will be publicly available on Monday, May 22, 2023 at montavillajazz.org.
